Drawing on the City

Part 2 Project 2024

‘Drawing on the City’ challenges the authorial role of the architect and developer when designing pieces of city in London. For too long, large scale developments have prioritised economic gains, becoming synonymous with the disillusion of local communities, and the displacement of their constituents and culture.

Instead, large-scale development should be cultivating and building upon existing culture. ‘Drawing on the City’ proposes a new methodology which invites openness and flexibility into the design process. In this project, dynamic drawing methods encourage smudging, erasing and redrawing, allowing for an intertwining of representation tools and site, coupled with policy integration at local authority level.

This amalgamation of policy and flexible design methodologies aim to provide a resilient framework of urban conditions which ensure design is responsive to our changing world, with the architect released from being the ‘hero’, instead acting as a facilitator who empowers communities, planners and developers.
