The Moment Part 2 Project 2024 Dan Herbert Oxford Brookes University Oxford | UK Living with dementia can often mean living in the moment. These moments can be filled with disorientation, anxiety and confusion as sufferers gradually lose their personal identity and are forced to navigate ever changing perceptions of the world. Consisting of an education centre and respite accommodation located on the Dartington Hall Estate in Devon, this project looks to both educate people about the disease as well as demonstrate how considered design strategies can assist in temporarily alleviating some symptoms, to create socially sustainable, dementia friendly spaces.Through extensive model making and in-depth research into symptoms such as visuo-spatial deficits, wayfinding problems and hallucinations, this project explores how architecture can be used to communicate the emotional, physiological and physical impact of the disease, with the aim of breaking the stigma around dementia.
