Production Design House Part 2 Project 2001 Robert Miles Queen's University Belfast | UK The coming together of applied art, craft, production and process define what the PRODUCTION DESIGN HOUSE is about. No such facility exists in Northern Ireland whereby artists and craftspeople can come together, each giving and sharing experience, to create a space that symbolises and defines art and craft merges different functions into a complete 'organism'. A building that is on the one hand an aesthetic casket for the display of work and final produce, but also a living building with apartments, workshops, where production occurs. This building houses workshops, a restaurant and lecture room, and social and educational functions. Market booths are positioned in a new central pedestrian street link between Botanic Avenue and University Street. The central Retail Gallery space is where one experiences the crossing 'bands' of artistic creation in a timeless capsule. Light entering the space colours and creates varying and timeless patterns and reflections upon the floor and people inside the space. The sharing and filtering of colours (produce) blends the whole space into a single experience. Display in the space is directionally spot lit, dating and timing their presence - people in the space are transient. Robert Miles' choice of a Craft & Design House built on a brownfield infill site above the tracks of a Belfast inner city railway was indeed a bold one. The result is a beautiful composition - a duet between artistry and poetry. The building has an enviable inevitability about it - a study of movement, space and light in glorious filtered colour - it possesses richness unique in Robert's hand.
