Vertical Kampung: Urban Village for an Integrated Community Part 2 Project 2019 Tengku Osman Hakim Tengku Yaacob MARA University of Technology - Puncak Alam campus | Malaysia Kampung Bharu, located at the most prime location in Kuala Lumpur has successfully remains pristine despite the urbanization around over decades ago. Unfortunately, sitting on a prime land and being directly on the path of gentrification, Kampung Bharu slowly loses its pristine remarks as the traditional Malay Kampung, and its sense of community following the ramification of Kuala Lumpur city. To maintain the essence of Kampung Bharu, the Vertical Kampong aims to implement the quintessence of a Malay vernacular architecture and lifestyle in the urban area. Apart from its innovative design, the ‘Vertical Kampong’ layout emphasized on the timeless elements of a village setting which emphasizes on climate and vernacular architectural approaches. Suburban character is strongly grounded in the planning as communal facilities are provided in the core to catalyse social interaction. The sub division and housing plots are sold as sky-land. Each land comes with a basic house and a garden compound whereby, this scheme does more than simply as an alternative financial solution, but as a strategy to allow communities to be part of the process that determine their attitude and growth. Appropriately, ‘Vertical Kampong’ represents a successful translation of the traditional village and a testament to an excellent contextualization in vertical form.
