No Other Place Part 1 Project 2023 Fintan Dalton Queen's University Belfast | UK On the windy rugged coast of Northern Ireland where castles are turned to ruins, a small remote town perseveres - Ballycastle. Ballycastle dates to the 14th century when it was a settlement that formed around Bonamargy Friary, Dunaneeny Castle and a castle on Ann St. Ballycastle is characterised by its rugged coastline, beaches, rock crevices and dramatic geology. Many locals hold fond memories of climbing through robust abandoned castle walls and the local friary. Ann St Is the heart of Ballycastle. On Ann St, small family businesses that have been passed down for generations provide the community with fresh produce, tools and crafts. On the 3 days of Ould Lammas Fair, a traditional event dating back to the towns origin, crowds of people from near and far stroll through Ann St, pausing at stalls to taste local foods, watch performances and play games. However, Ballycastle has no dedicated space for its community. There is no place where the community can orient itself, strengthen and prosper. Through careful understanding and observation of Ballycastle, its culture, history and memories are crystallised into a permanent built form located in the centre of Ann St - a town hall for no other place.
