The land Beyond the beetroot fields Part 2 Project 2007 Richard James University of Portsmouth | UK As an abstract of nature, the systematic classification of plants offers a unique perspective. Devoid of habitat, we see plants thrive in manipulated environments. This thesis intends to apply this alternative to Gravesend, exploring the potential role of this second nature within the urban. A need for manipulating environmental trends arises; as a result the botanic garden becomes central to a localised commerce based on natural forces. The market garden consists of an enclosing wall which rises sheer from the ground, solid and permanent until it separates, floating towards the river, its internal structure pulsing with hydroponic feeds.
