Proposal for Ylivieska Church Part 2 Project 2020 Benjamin Schulman Aalto University | Finland The 230-year-old church of the Finnish town of Ylivieska was destroyed in a fire at Easter 2016. Immediatly after, the wish to build a new church arose in the local community. The project aims to present a meaningful proposal for the new church of Ylivieska.The nature of church buildings is explored through a survey of the tradition of church building in Finland. Tradition is understood as an active mode of operation in a community, passed on through generations, and reinterpreted to retain its meaningfulness. Seven churches are visited, analyzed and redrawn in a uniform style. The town of Ylivieska is explored as a location for building a new church. Location is understood as a collection of meanings given by the local community. Local meanings given to the tradition of church building are sought out in a discussion with the vicar of Ylivieska, Timo Määttä.The project aims for meaningfulness by reinterpreting the tradition of church building as an architecture able to receive and communicate these community-given meanings. Through meaningfulness, the proposal becomes an integral part of its time and location.The project thus becomes a proposal for the pursuit of meaningfulness as a path for creating good architecture.
