Part 2 Project 2015

“Most people have it in them to become good craftsmen. They have the capacities to become better at, and more involved in, what they do - the abilities to localise, question and open up problems that can result, eventually, in good work. Even if society does not reward people who have made this effort as much as it should, in the end, they can achieve a sense of self-worth - which is reward enough”

- Richard Sennett

Firstly the ambition of this project is to examine the hidden cost of Melamine faced chipboard furniture, the environmental cost, the health cost, the social cost.

It then addresses the impact and takes advantage of the waste timber generated by small to medium building sites that would normally be disposed of in a skip.

Finally this project proposes that a facility be built that at its heart is workshop to allow people to develop the skills required to make real wood furniture.

The project also concerns itself with the manipulation of an area of The Old Kent Road in order to accommodate workshop storage, a new railway station, open air & covered markets, open air & covered theatres.
