Peckham in Motion: The Threads of Diasporic Convergence Part 1 Project 2024 Charlie McManus University of Portsmouth | UK Peckham in Motion aims to celebrate the rich and diverse history of Peckham whilst addressing the social, political and environmental issues prominent today. Split into two stages of design, urban planning and architectural intervention, the project’s overarching concept is developed from the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the search for an 18th. Through thematic exploration of film and cinematography, the proposal for SDG 18 manifests around the idea of ‘Freedom of Movement’.Situated in the dynamic borough of Southwark, London, the first phase of the project aims to map radical new ways of urban living and alternative visions of inhabitation. By exploring the experience in Peckham through the medium of film, the project proposes to create a new urban fabric that sits above the existing environment; seeking to foster harmonious interactions and benefit the local communities.Phase two proposes a primarily elevated steel structure with mixed-use housing situated between Peckham Rye Station’s trainlines. With the residential function operating as a transitional space for migrants to acclimatise to their new surroundings, the additional function of a museum allows for the stories and journeys of their cultures to be heard, whilst also providing improved transportation infrastructure to move freely.
