The intermodal Santiago Sur is a practical solution for receiving buses coming from the south of the region. Today these buses must go to the Santiago city downtown, creating traffic jams and lowering the service efficiency.

From this need, we look a better site to replace the current intermodal building complex. We went to the south of Santiago and found a place with better connectivity. At last, the place was in the ex-military airport of Cerrillos front area, near to the highway heading south, and in a few years,
it shall be connected with a metro station. This ex-airport is being transformed in a real state building project with a huge public space, using the landing stripe to make and huge park of 2 km long.

At the end of these stripes, we place our project. As a first approach to the design, we thought of a space ship about to land, since the scale of the environment is so big, our project has to be a landmark. We receive the passengers and make use of the previous design to our advantage. The main idea of the project, is a huge volume that is flying over the intermodal station. In this volume, we shelter programs that support this intermodal such as a theater, food stores, in order to give life to this strategically point. In the underground we propose the ending of the line 6 of the metro, parking lots…

The structure becomes a challenge to solve since it is “flying”. We solve through 4 truss beam, made by beams of 1 meter high. We decide to use a huge structure that really draw the skeleton of the building. The truss beams rest on four colums of concrete, this allow the structure to float above the ground. This flying structure magnifies the steel use as resistance to traction, and use concrete as compression force, making the best of each materials.
