atelier Part 1 Project 2004 Scott EldridgeCassie SouthonDearbhla Mulligan Deakin University Geelong | Australia Aiming to bridge an urban schism, Ateilier Revisited was a project that based itself on broad urban strategies defined by localised constructs. Essentially, a split has evolved through the centre of Geelong with the growth of a major highway alongside train lines. The project proposed a strategy to re-establish a cohesive connection - to stich the main commercial developments of Geelong with the major suburbs at a transport and pedestrian node focused around an essentially introverted concealed public piazza. A number of institutions fed off this public area including a museum, information and interpretive centres, as well as a design studio and accommodation. Scott EldridgeCassie SouthonDearbhla Mulligan Atelier Revisited was the six-week second-stage of a complex design exercise to create student accommodation and a design studio on a site squeezed between major rail and traffic junctions. This latter stage shifted the focus of a project that had first dealt with the reuse of three grain-silos, to the shaping of a new public space alongside the Atelier and an expanded railway station and new museum. The Southon and Eldridge design was an urbane response that not only, in just six weeks, completely remodelled the first stage Atelier, but also created a series of exciting spaces fitting for a young city on the move.
