The Stockholm library extension expands upon the concepts of procession, walls inhabited with stories and the ‘Temple of knowledge’ of Asplund’s original design. The extension respects the existing by joining with it strongly - creating a symbiosis between old and new and challenging the notion of “touching the building lightly”.

The long atrium continues Asplund’s processional route and introduces another key space imbued with awe, capacity for knowledge and monumental scale.
The extension’s walls, which celebrate illustrations of Swedish folklore and also hark back to the original library’s Egyptian theme, transmit their stories like the pages of a book.

This student presents a design that responds well to the challenges of an extremely complex design brief. The level of detailed resolution is mature and thorough, drawing comparison from Asplunds existing building, its heritage and Swedish literary culture. The design is explored at a variety of scale from the urban thru the immediacy of its external elevations to the point of the user in an intimate examination of key internal spaces.
