River's Edge: a place for media and entertainment

Part 1 Project 2006

This project is situated in the Southgate area of Bath, a location outlined for large scale redevelopment later this year. This scheme proposes the development of one site which lies between the shopping district, train station and the River Avon.

As an alternative to the scheduled redevelopment, I have proposed to insert an intensive mix of functions under the umbrella heading of media and entertainment, with the aim of rejuvenating the existing urban context.

The proposed buildings would provide a new public domain in the city centre, aimed at a variety of users, which has a clear theme and identity.

Duncan Flemington’s final project was considered by all at Bath to be an outstanding achievement.

After analysing the given locale and choosing a particular site Duncan developed an articulate design thesis which became manifest in a project of extraordinary boldness and vision.

In skilfully employing a full range of communication media Duncan produced a true tour de force which won him the respect of his fellow students and visiting critics alike.

His project served to challenge the orthodoxy of current plans for Bath’s city edges and displayed the same magnificent obsession which characterised the City’s founding architect, John Wood.
