The Margate Social Circus School Part 1 Project 2019 Petros Tsifoutidis University of Kent | UK The project engages in a practically oriented exploration of self sustainability, with the focal point being the creation of a circus school that is affordable to its students and beneficial to its visitors. Having the London School of Architecture as a precedent study, the Margate Social Circus School is all about providing diverse opportunities for work to its students, although in this case these opportunities are contained within a large scale modular building. The basis of the proposal is the integration of technology and concept as equals in the design process, a path that was chosen as the best alternative to reach a self sustainable result. As an outcome of this way of thinking, due to the design brief’ s requirement for a series of large scale spaces, the grand spanning roof of the building is utilised as a revenue producing hydroponic greenhouse space. The school engages with its concept in all scales, as in the urban one a connection is created with the adjacent Dalby square (community engagement), whereas in the detail scale the low carbon footprint Margate brick is combined with the widely available greenhouse material, the corrugated plastic.
