Redevelopment Proposal for the area Stuttgart University / City Gardens Park

A Hydro-Refilling Station, a quality restaurant and a large event room with the capacity to offer private and public gatherings, situated on the University of Stuttgart Campus and the `Stadtgartens`, a Park with an old stock of trees.
At the nothern end of the park is a main road which is heavily used by the traffic travelling in and around the city of Stuttgart.

Our aim is to create a clear divide between, on the one side the natural area of the park and on the opposing side the more `man-made` practical area of the city and the road. On the strength of these two uses for the area two buildings are planned which through the use of different materials and having the entrances facing away from each other focus on this theme. The Hydro-Refilling Station facing the road, the restaurant and events room facing into the park. Between the two buildings is a underground parking entrance (continued existence).

To emphasize the character of the Hydro-Refilling Station we have choosen a steel construction with solar panels, which will provide the energy for the creation of the hydrogen. Found inside the building is predominatley `harder´ material such as steel, glass and sheet metal, while on the outside the progression of technology is in evidence. The restaurant and event room stresses the natural theme with ´softer´ materials (wood) more predominant giving references to the park. Through the use of wooden walkways and sitting areas new leisure possibilities are created while connecting the building with the park area. Not only for the students, but more importantly creating an attraction for the citizens and visitors to Stuttgart.



They worked together at our institute on a design project called „H2K3“ (assembly hall and hydrogene-gas-station on the campus area) during summer term 2002 for their intermediate exam (Vordiplom).

The project required the application not only of architectural design, but also of such areas as supporting-structure planning, technical equipment, building materials and physics, as well as building construction. The scales of the models and plans were made up to 1:10 and 1:1. The group worked on the project with commitment and a very good architectural comprehension.

The project was constructed by using a system of simple wooden glue-lam c-structures for the first building, opening itself to the campus area and a second building as counterpart, using a steel-structure reflecting the c-form and opening it to the main road and the public area with the hospital outside the university campus.

The differences in materials and functional aspects of the two parts of the building enhance the main thoughts of an open and modern project, which is as well socially integrating the two sides of the park area along the street.

The students of the group all received a 1,0 (excellent) for their work.

We support the application of the group for the students competition and wish them success.
