Atmosphere & Climate Research Centre, Keilder Part 2 Project 2006 Kevin FraserMarcelina Marszalek University of Huddersfield | UK The Atmospheric Observation Facility is designed to explore new relationships between architecture and the landscape, as well as being a base to educate, inform and analyse the effects of our changing climate. Split into two distinct uses, the buildings sweeping central ‘chasm’ flows into and out of the hillside, encouraging user movement through the scheme. The central giant sphere, a hub for education, becomes the focal point against the forest backdrop; the intense space created beneath marks the point of entry into the visitor spaces. The architecture mediates between new public space and existing rural landscape; the relationship between internal and external space is constantly explored as one circulates through the building.
