Decode Part 2 Project 2024 Euan Clarke Mackintosh School of Architecture | UK This thesis examines the accessibility and ownership of personal information, proposing a future where personal data is decentralised and nationalised. Data has become a major commodity owned by tech companies who transform private information into data points which they use to inform commercial decisions. This shift has compromised personal privacy, leaving people unaware of the surveillance and manipulation conducted daily. Data is stored in physical servers and these companies have succeeded at hiding them within ‘black boxes’ located in isolated locations, inaccessible to the public.If governance is no longer possible without exploitation of private information, then this thesis relocates data centres back into the city, combining them with a futuristic parliamentary typology that makes the incomprehensible data realm both visible and understandable. The new infrastructure will regenerate an abandoned landscape by implementing a flexible data storage solution while providing the necessary facilities that provide new civic opportunities as well as promote political discourse. It will be a place of political activation, a symbol of civil liberty uncovering new forms of life that would have been impossible if left in the hands of the big tech companies. Euan Clarke Tutor(s)
