Living Between Water

Dharavi, the biggest slum in Mumbai and the world, constantly suffers from flooding. Despite the abundant water resources from rainwater in Mumbai, residents in Dharavi cannot access a stable clean water supply because of the absence of proper drainage and sewage system. In light of the situation and the development of concrete 3D printing, the design aims to explore the possibility to utilise the local water resources to benefit residents in Dharavi with concrete 3D printing. Therefore, I developed a housing typology that integrates rainwater collection and storage system with living and working.

This housing typology is composed of a set of screen wall systems. The screen wall is inspired by gyroid structure — a homogenous, porous structure with two separated spaces. The wall cavity of the 3D-printed screen wall is used for harvesting collecting, filtrating, purifying and storing water within the building mass. The other space of the screen wall serves as a verandah (in the interior façade) and a balcony (in the exterior façade). The two screen walls are connected to a network of water system underground that can adjust the water consumption throughout different seasons, and also distribute water to nearby neighbourhood. Units are hung between two screen walls. Beams, slabs and partition walls can be rearranged to cater to different family sizes. A continuous circulation can connect all courtyards within the site, which is inspired from Cotton Chawl, a housing typology unique in Mumbai, to create stronger social bonding within the site.
