Urban Performance

A network of mobility operates in a landscape of urban activity, in an unpredictable choreography of performance. Site research identified distinct edge conditions defining social, cultural and geographic change, locating a neutral space between, here exciting urban and social opportunities exist.

A beacon of performance, observing the changing pace of activity; a primary processional route fragments to create a Journey that allows the traveller unpredictable, discreet and overt moments of contextual engagement. A form that describes the internal life of the building in a language that shifts from fixed to ephemeral, expressing programme, journey and spatial narrative.

Through careful investigation of the patterns and desires of performance, Mark Walker has developed this proposal for a series of spaces for cinema, drama and dance participation raised above the level of the station, providing panoramic views of the city beyond, reconnecting the haphazard spaces determined by the nineteenth-century development of Clapham Junction. Original analysis of the ethereal qualities of performance in this context, has led to a scheme that controls the experience of connection from the pragmatic threshold to the busy main street, to the evocatively sensual nature of the performance surfaces that appear to float above the steel landscape.
