The PIVOT at Munnakkarai, Negombo, Sri Lanka: An Exploration of Spatial Resilience Architecture to Redefine Ecology and Social Upliftment Part 2 Project 2024 Kaushalya Somarathna University of Moratuwa | Sri Lanka 'The PIVOT' Progression Integrates Versatility, offering Opportunities for Transformationto meet the evolving needs of the community and environment. In a vulnerable context, spatial resilience serves as a key tool for enhancing community well- being and infrastructure by integrating urban functions and boosting accessibility. The architectural approach in Negombo, Sri Lanka, addresses critical issues such as lagoon pollution, inadequate infrastructure, and the need for improved aquaculture, education, tourism, and community engagement. The master plan focuses on revitalizing this area by merging urban and rural elements, leveraging tourism, fishing, and commerce, and restoring environmental balance. The project, implemented in five phases, starts with renovating existing structures and adding facilities like waste collection points, community workshops, boat manufacturing areas, and tourist accommodations. The design employs modular components, precast concrete piles, and incorporates community labor, drawing from local construction techniques. By emphasizing flexibility, modularity, and sustainability, this initiative aims to tackle pollution and degradation, enhance connectivity, and foster a resilient, self-sufficient local economy while preserving cultural heritage. The approach not only addresses immediate challenges but also sets the foundation for long-term ecological and social upliftment. Kaushalya Somarathna Tutor(s)
