Enigma: Horizontality and Verticality within the Local Vernacular Part 2 Project 2024 Natalie Anderson Queen's University Belfast | UK To create a sense of enigma within architecture and the built environment, we require a combination of serial vision and spatially considered episodes which can be created through the phenomenon of transparency, exemplified through layering of planes. With the additional aspects of movement, inhabited walls, Ma (the Japanese consciousness of space), and the spatial effect of light and shadow, a specific, yet unique atmosphere is created when these are combined. The unification of these architectural elements and theories no doubt creates a highly considered space that is responsive and interchangeable to and within its environment.This thesis project encompasses an exploration of horizontal and vertical propositions for two hostels in two differentiating environments - Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland and Naples, Italy. The two hostel proposals - based on horizontality and verticality - present the typologies, techniques, and outcomes of the experience of enigmatic architecture.We as architects should strive to create low-carbon spaces and moments that are specific to their surrounding environment and create anticipation to unlock memories from the past, all whilst encouraging social activity in both dense cities and remote landscapes.
