Public Sports Center Part 1 Project 2020 Robert Tang Chinese University of Hong Kong | China Inspired by the adjacent old quarry of A Kung Ngam, the project steers away from conventional sports center layout and aims at reflecting the historical identity and characteristics of the industrial area. The massing composition is broken down into separate functional blocks, connected by exposed circular tubes serving as horizontal and vertical circulation connectors - a key design feature reminiscent of conveyor belts in old industrial facilities.The sports complex is well integrated with the sloped site. The main reception connects to both levels of the site which allows multiple entry points. The main hall is elevated from the ground level to create a continuous public space connecting the main streets to the A Kung Ngam Park. The covered ground plaza serves as a communal space for Sunday markets, Children's playground, outdoor performance venue etc..Materiality is detrimental to the project's design. Tubular aluminum facade screens and weathered copper cladding gives the building's exterior a sharp and clean appearance and highlight the relationship between massing and tube connections. The exposed structure and mechanical services of the interior give a dynamic and energetic feel in contrast to the exterior.
