Urban Building: Film Club Part 1 Project 2006 Verena FurtadoChloe Shang University of Strathclyde | UK Nestled among the busiest pedestrian and vehicular paths of the city-centre, the triangular site chosen in the south-eastern corner of Merchant City helped create a new focal point in Glasgow. The Film Club, accessed from the proposed pedestrian path, is externally divided into two parts through the use of contrasting materials; the north façade being glazed – creating total transparency revealing the various functions within and the varying floor heights, and the south being a solid concrete core clad in copper, concealing services. Internally, spaces are arranged in order of privacy, around a void and feature staircase at each level. Verena FurtadoChloe Shang The selected project concluded a session long investigation into the relationship between the city, and it's constituent part, the individual building, as an introduction to urban design whereby each student had to develop an urban strategy within which were developed specific programme typologies of housing and public building. The selected project, Film Club, was deemed especially meritorious by initially the choice of site, an 'island' in Glasgow's old town, and the subsequent confident architectural development, taken to an extreme level of detail, realising a building in both form and articulation suitably addressing the exposed yet tight urban context.
