A Journey to Acceptance – A Multi-Faith Crematorium in Leicester Part 2 Project 2019 Raveena Bhavika Bhavsar De Montfort University | UK The traditional crematorium and funeral service detach grief-bearers from experiencing the reality of death. When my mother passed away 2 years ago, My family and I faced many problems grieving as the service and spaces were insensitive, dysfunctional and dispiriting to the grief-bearer and emotionally disconnected us from facing the loss of our loved one. Rather, the service conducted us to act as spectators. Furthermore, there was no consideration to people of all religions and their deathly rituals. This encouraged me to question how a funeral service should be carried, how a space can heal someone from their pain, denial and anger and if one space can accommodate for people of all faiths. The Crematorium respectfully celebrates the life of the deceased but also creates a safe and reassuring environment for grief-bearers to surrender to the journey of grief and experience the reality of death. Focusing on the universal connections of; the 6 stages of grief and the underlining geometry based on nature and religion. This journey is for long-term healing by allowing grief-bearers the space and freedom to heal and reach the final stage of Hope. Raveena Bhavika Bhavsar Tutor(s)
