Myco-mmunity Doncaster

Part 1 Project 2024

This community focussed proposal is designed to encourage a feeling of identity and collective spirit among local residents. Knitting into the urban fabric, Myco-mmunity aims to bring together and engage the surrounding networks on one site, encouraging further housing, densification, urban greening and pedestrian agency. Fundamental to the brief, the building acts as a hub for discovery within the world of mycology, the study of fungi, including mushrooms, mycelium and yeast. It will become the Northern home of the British Mycological Society, a charity open to all interested in research and development within the world of mycology.

The programme caters to three core user groups. Local residents (general public), short-term residency scientists and full-time employees of the BMS. The arrangement of the proposal sparks interconnectivity between these stakeholders, strengthening community and personal networks. The design involves the retrofit and adaptation of existing building fabric; a considered approach enhances under-utilised areas with minimal demolition. In the new-build element, architectural connections have been made to reflect contextual building stock. Structural, locally sourced limestone provides a feeling of permanence, whilst instilling low carbon construction methods. The landscaping strategy invites biodiversity net gain and provides habitats for the growth of mycelium.
