In response to the emerging issues of the rapid urbanisation of Kochi, eight key urban strategies were formulated - tackling issues of: suburbanisation, rise in vehicular traffic, emerging mental and lifestyle illnesses, deteriorating ecology, challenges of climate change with recurring floods, food security, social and gender inequalities.

The rapid population growth of Kochi has resulted in urban expansion to floodplains and greenfields which in turn has created social, mobility, ecological and economic challenges. Instead of responding to the problem as a reaction, the studio developed a vision for making Kochi liveable and sustainable.

Urban strategies were developed to tackle local issues with global outlook through systems thinking, scientific modelling of complex relationships between the physical form of the city and its social, environmental, economic, and institutional subsystems.

Through innovative research methods and tools, the studio developed advanced analysis of complex systems model for social, economic, spatial, and ecological analysis of the city. This was based on the 80 sqkm GIS map created by the studio.

The proposition includes developing strategic urban interventions such as public places people and nature, retrofitting neighbourhoods and critical social, economic, and institutional infrastructure to trigger the transformation of Kochi towards a liveable and sustainable city.
