West Library Assembly: Reshaping West Library Part 1 Project 2014 Jack Idle Central Saint Martins, UAL | UK The proposal is to generate a connector linking the West Library to the Meltdown Bar, along Caledonian Road, in North London. The connection aims to, not only, link the existing structures of these two buildings, but to re-program the interiors; creating relationships between the current programs. The act of unifying such established buildings will generate a landmark, in itself; however, tailoring the landmark so that it responds sensitively to the existing buildings’ poses considerable challenge. The overall aim of the proposal is to create a social interface, embedded in the community through the existing buildings and programs, but with a ‘unified heart’; which acts as a catalyst to connect the diverse social groups of Caledonian Road.Programmatic relationships are generated by the circulation and platforms within the atrium, of the proposal, in which all of the programs meet and mix; releasing the existing buildings from the constraints of repetitive floor plates. The overlapping of this space will use the sound of activities, the light created by the architecture and the movement of users to build a place of exchange. A flowing public space which bring members of the community into the library to see the spectacle of a pensioners’ Tea Dance taking place a few meters from a Tae Kwan Do bout. This crossover and mix if programs and users is a social interface for the community. Jack Idle Tutor(s)
