Part 2 Project 2020

On 1906, 200 workers from Chiloe Island were hired by the “Sociedad Explotadora Del Baker” to cutdown trees and producewood. As the time passed by, the company abandoned them in an island, far from any connection with the continent. As they did not have the resources to survive, the workers started to die so they built their own cemetery, which was a mystery for more than a hundred years.

This historical event make it clear that there is still an open wound in the southern Chilean territories. The adverse weather and laboral conditions from Patagonia, harbour one of the most terrible and unrecognized tragedies that had ever happen in this country.

The Dead's Island Memorial aims to rebuild the history of this abandoned group of people and to recognize them. The project seeks giving dignity to this place, taking advantage of its tourist appeal in order to rebuild this piece of history. The idea is to resignify the space by implementing new infrastructure for public use and a memorial. This will be an opportunity for reflection, fulfilling our responsibility to recognize and reveal not only the importance of this event, but also the geographical value of the Island.
