Lowestoft - Education Landscape

This project locates a series of live regeneration projects within a structured landscape along the waters edge re-uniting a town currently split by its disused docks. At the most immediate scale a building project opens the quayside, and provides shared education facilities for the area and the emergent University of Suffolk.

The building operates as a shift in the ground; a dune containing library and teaching and social facilities presses against the town and shelters a series of public spaces beneath. It utilises locally based marine engineering technology in its superstructure whilst the technology of quayside engineering, flood protection and flint walling inform its relationship with the ground.

The Unit has been working in Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth. Both towns were once prosperous and inventive; both are now marginal and have lost direction.

Kierans proposal for the catalyst building for a University is a carefully crafted work that makes subtle connections between architectural imagination at the strategic scale, landscape and building. What is particularly impressive about the work is the ability to use everyday elements to unlock the potential of a difficult piece of land that has come to blight the town. In this way the proposed institution is radically open, turning what has become derelict into a new front for the town
