This comprehensive design project represents the development of a scheme influenced by the architectural research by making unit. The concept of the butterfly has been continued and explored further with the addition of contextual research and literary references.

The area on the West Cliff in which the site is located is dominated by Victorian villas which are now used as hotels. By analysing the existing context it was determined that the historic role of Bournemouth could be re-established through the proposal for the Durley Road Site. The project reimagines the site as a ‘wellness retreat’ offering escapism in the midst of what health experts are calling a mental health crisis. The programme for the site features private accommodation, a wellness centre which provides alternative therapies and smaller retail units such as a café, bike and surf rental store. The ecology of the site is founded on the promotion of health and wellbeing and orients around the connection to Bournemouth’s past.

The sites location within the West Cliff conservation area relates to the cultivation of botanicals on the site as the area management policies outline the need to retain and enhance the green spaces within the conservation zone.
