The Abstract and the Representational: An Extension to the Fitzwilliam Museum

Cambridge is an architecturally rich city, home to the Fitzwilliam Museum. An extension to the Fitzwilliam Museum aims to pair elements of both classical and contemporary architecture, in order to form it’s own bold aesthetic that celebrates the historic city it is positioned within. The project strives to enhance and contribute to the community of Cambridge by providing additional public galleries as well as facilities for restoration, education and administration.

3. A new addition to the Cambridge ‘backs’. The key spatial elements developed through a logical sequence of three pure geometrical forms, consisting of a linear connection bridge on axis with a drum; cradled by a U-shaped gallery sequence.
4. A new centre for research, restoration and administration at ground level.
5. The public domain. Contemporary art galleries, a lecture theatre and restaurant occupy the upper floors, sitting beneath a rooftop sculpture garden.
6. A confident connection between old and new. The view from Peterhouse College into the Fitzwilliam grounds
7. The Journey between old and new. A linear gallery meets the Fitzwilliam galleries at first floor level, bridging the existing with the proposed. The threshold provides a continuation to the Fitzwilliam’s gallery sequence, opening up its central blind
8. Vertical circulation up the exhibition drum. The spatial element of the drum acts as a triple height exhibition space. The drum becomes the heart of the building providing the core circulatory route from first floor and above.
9. At top floor level, a restaurant with a view.
10. A Museum fit for the 21st Century. The vertical transition from private to public.
