This Ancient Coastal Town in Lebanon Holds One of the World’s Oldest Salt Mines. On the coast of the ancient port town Anfeh, or Ampi, as it was called, is the location of one the oldest salt production sites in the world. Salt is valuable commodity in Anfeh since ancient times, and the village salt ponds are what make it unique.
The project was initiated by the principles of biomimetic design, which entail using locally available resources and the sun's energy to promote growth and development. Salt Farm Village was conducted on three main aspects: producing salt for use in building materials, identifying its material properties and strategically relating them, and incorporating the building material in seawater-based infrastructure. The objective was to create various salt-based typologies that could play crucial roles in this kind of infrastructure. Ultimately, the focus shifted from the "Make" to the "Flow" side, as the project aimed to establish a closed-loop system run on solar energy and seawater, with zero waste production. This project concentrated on both making a material (how to make it, how to build it); could be regarded as an abstract futuristic vision.
