Widcombe Music Centre

Part 1 Project 2007
Daniel Lewis

The organic nature of the design is a result from continuous development and refinement that has been largely dictated by the physical extremities of the site.

The outer 'protective' skin simply responds to the urban context of Widcombe whereas the inner 'permeable' skin provides a sense of place and reason.

Widcombe Music Centre provides both practice and performance facilities where people of all ages and musical backgrounds can meet and express their passion for music.

This is a design proposal, which exploits the natural and somewhat rare surroundings where two very different edge conditions meet on such an interesting corner site.

Daniel Lewis

This project ran for the final semester and required each student to develop their own brief on a site of their own choosing.

Daniel Lewis’s project was considered by all at Bath to be an outstanding piece of work. After analysing the given locale Daniel developed an articulate design thesis, which developed into in a project of great maturity and modesty. His project served to challenge the orthodoxy of current plans for Bath’s city edges and displayed the highest design standards, rooted in the application of technical knowledge, cultural awareness and the use of independent creative imagination.
