ATTENTION DEFICIT AND HYPERACTIVITY DISORDERS CLINIC Part 2 Project 2004 Jennifer WallingAlexander Cotterill UNITEC Institute of Technology Auckland | New Zealand Five issues shaped the design.1.The quality of architectural surface: The bland, smooth surface – the eye skims over quickly without event. The interesting, undulating surface – the eye slows & focuses.2.The behaviour of the ADHD subject (Hyper-Active or Distracted): Distracted behaviour diverges & passes too quickly to allow comprehension or depth. Hyperactive attention converges & focuses.3.Clinical Observation using divergent & convergent means: The Gaze surveys existing behavioural signs. The Glance focuses on symptoms, cutting open to contemplate causes.4.Surface Stimulus levels as Clinical Device to activate sorting.5.Opening as limit/control: junction between panorama, surface & viewer. Jennifer WallingAlexander Cotterill This project for an Attention Deficit Hyper-Activity Disorder Clinic uses the phenomenon and behaviour of occupants in the process of design through to the organisation of the building and its surface treatment. The site, set between a busy sunken motorway and a hyperactive street, was investigated by continuous line drawings to set time. The building is organised around issues of stimulus and interest set against blandness and boredom. The surface of the building responds to viewing at speed from the motorway and in accordance with the clinical programme, excludes and reveals a panoramic view of the harbour below. Tutor(s)
