Leeds Art and Media Centre Part 1 Project 2004 Stephen ReadFederico Lippi Leeds Beckett University | UK My design addresses the issue of sustainable building. The UK is a wealthy, developed country meaning that we have a moral responsibility to set a precedent in this area for the rest of the world to follow. The brief was to create a cinema complex combined with a variety of exhibition spaces. My design explores the possibility of naturally ventilating spaces, which are traditionally thought to require very tightly controlled mechanical systems. The brief was for an arts centre on the north bank of the Aire in Central Leeds, comprising three cinemas, two art galleries, a cafe and restaurant, facilities for research into digital art, and management accommodation.Stephen's thoughtful, rational, conscientious, modular planning envisages each activity being carried out in circumstances approaching the ideal, many spaces having a maximum number of window-seats offering interesting views. An innovative system of natural ventilation for the cinemas was proposed. Considerable attention was given to the quality of the daylighting, for which Stephen was awarded the Derek Phillips Prize.
