Visual Arts Bridge Part 1 Project 2007 Mark Chan University of Bath | UK Visual Arts Bridge is a response to 'The Future for Bath', a long-term vision for the development and revitalisation of the world heritage city. Aside from providing the studio and exhibition spaces required by the client, the development will also strengthen the connections between Widcombe and the city, restore the various historical qualities of the site, and create a new landmark destination relating to Bath's existing inhabited bridges. The proposal promotes visual arts to the public through the integration of exhibition spaces into the public realm, and is the result of thorough analysis of the complex site and its constraints. Mark Chan’s final project was considered by all at Bath to be an outstanding example design excellence. In choosing his own site and developing his own brief for his building, Mark displayed an extraordinary depth in his critical analysis and design ability. This ranged from the development of an urban masterplan to the detailed resolution of inventive building elements. In doing so Mark’s project exemplifies the Department’s ethos in aspiring to the highest design standards, rooted in the application of technical excellence, cultural awareness and the use of independent creative imagination.
