The Gorse Cognitive Exchange

Part 1 Project 2024

The Gorse Cognition Exchange is intended to facilitate interaction, knowledge sharing, exploration, and production. As a higher education institution building within a new vision for a research campus in Cornwall, the focus is to promote collaborative learning across creative and scientific domains.

Central to the ideas for the response to the site context is the relationship of the building with the landscape. Gorse on the site has provided the inspiration, observing that gorse shifts and moves the substrate beneath it to create a foundation from which to grow. This has informed the conceptual approach to the building as an incision into folds in the landscape.

At the core is an auditorium surrounded by supporting seminar, learning, gallery, technical and artists’ workshop spaces. These are arranged with the intention to expose artists and scientists to novel concepts, thereby stimulating cultural, scientific, and technological evolution.

The building is an assembly of diverse and layered spaces unified by careful consideration of the qualities of natural light and uses sensory experience as a medium for exchange including for users who are neurodiverse.

The ambition for the project is to reimagine learning environments for inclusion and innovation, and to have rooted the building in its place.
