Danube Dialysis

Part 1 Project 2012

Danube Dialysis deals with the complex relationship between the urban dynamic and the affect that has on a major resource. The Danube is integral in the mechanics of Budapest, linking the city to other settlements along this major continental artery. This dependant relationship between the Danube and the cities it supports has meant that the river is overused and not managed or maintained the way it should be. Cyanide mining, sewage dumping, waste disposal and agriculture pollution are just a few of the activities that have caused the deterioration of this river. As attempts to correct this begin in Budapest by means of better sewage cleaning and more responsible waste disposal, how is the river going to change? Danube Dialysis is a project that looks to aid these efforts, analyse them and expose the state of the river to the public that take it for granted.

The river is the protagonist in this project, the building is designed to cater to the water; to monitor, clean and analyse it as the city it flows through develops. The three major filtering spaces direct how people analyse and view the water. The process of water filtration drives the form of the building, with the public being guided through by a pre determined route as to reveal the damage that has been done to the river and the lengths that must be taken to care for it. There is a direct physical link between the river and the site that imposes onto Budapest, the dirty water is raised above the city and taken deep into its interior. By treating the water with superiority it further highlights the idea of a building designed for water, people acting as the secondary users. The public are involved in the process so that a closer relationship with their river can develop.
