Open Structure - Vocational School, India | Bamboo & Renovation Part 1 Project 2019 Yuen Shing Chan University of Hong Kong | China An open structure is designed for being a vocational school in Mumbai with a chosenmaterial as prominent construction material. Bamboo, a commonly seen constructionassisting material is chosen as adaptation on a usable yet abandoned colonial school, toconceal the existing structure and let it coexist with the material and the surroundings.Considering that Indians have a mixed feeling upon its colonial history due to its darkpast, they tend to abandon the less touristy buildings, like the chosen school in MumbaiCentral railway cluster. Yet, it would be such a waste of its history, culture and material.As a result, bamboo structure in strengthened scaffolding structure as it fits the functionof doing repair, concealing and freeing up interior.At the end, the form of a box-like scaffolding-like frame structure is used as itssecondary facade to conceal yet also provide abruption of its existence in a humble, sothe structure can be distinguishable but blended into their daily culture at the same time.Besides, by providing the openly interpretable structure around its periphery, anoperable facade is made for push functions out and free up the space inside.
