Ensuring secure, well-managed, and equitable access to water is crucial for a liveable city. In Calicut, the reliance on groundwater by 95% of its residents is hindered by mismanagement, pollution, and clogged drains, which endanger water quality, accessibility, and biodiversity. In Calicut, despite 180 rainy days, water scarcity and inefficient resource utilisation persist. Protecting Sarovaram wetlands, Canoly Canal, rivers, and man-made ponds is crucial for groundwater recharge and water quality. By reducing rainwater runoffs during the monsoon and preventing contamination, Calicut can ensure a water-secure future. Public engagement is key to safeguarding these assets and addressing waste management, clogged drains, and sewage to prevent waterbody and groundwater contamination. A decentralised water management park is proposed for Calicut, enable the city to become water-wise. The park includes community engagement, education through its public open spaces, and waste management facilities, while it will secure groundwater sources by enabling the recharging Saraovaram wetlands and canals through rainwater harvesting and cleaning. Prioritising water quality and sustainable management is vital for Calicut's health, economy, and residents' quality of life.
