SOFTWARE RESEARCH BASE

ABSTRACT

Software Research campuses involve a complex relationship between humans and technology. It is the complex nature of this relationship, which I have endeavored to capture and create in the design in terms of "built" and so called " unbuilt" environment.

Everything in a software house is becoming increasingly human oriented because it is in these people that the company invests. Thus it is my attempt in this project to strike a balance between humans and technology by trying to create a balance between nature-the root of mankind or humans and built environment that is manmade corresponding to technology.
In such a project work environment plays a very important role in the way and level to which a researcher performs. Because of the varied work patterns (individual and group), it becomes imperative to create open, flexible spaces which foster a healthy environment.

All in all progress is the keyword. Progress in terms of people, program, architecture and environment. Progress should be defined as an increase in civility, and an increase in the common well being with the acknowledgement of limits, the limits of resources and time and place that are real, limits that we continually try to ignore.

True progress is not about quantity; true progress is about quality. And I believe that a correct architecture is and must be central to achieving what I think progress should represent.

TUTOR’S STATEMENT

Devika Parmar’s design thesis on Software Research Base is one of the finest projects done at Rizvi College of Architecture and the University of Mumbai. Her architectural design addresses the contemporary issue of creative development of a stimulating work environment. Her design attempts to shape an appropriate environment to work in, integrating the built and un-built spaces.

The quest for evolving a humane architecture through use of contemporary technology and fusing it with a sensitive landscape design has resulted in an imaginative and innovative project. The scale of the built environment is appropriate. The informal spaces for social interactions have been articulated to enable development of better communication and healthy relationships. The concern for excellence is reflected at all levels of design, from overall site planning, building design to details.

The aesthetics of her architecture reflects the zeitgeist. It is at once modern and progressive. The information technology and software development, are the prime sectors of national development. Together they are transforming the quality of life in India. It is most appropriate that Devika Parmar has thought about improving the quality of environment to work in for those engaged in software research.

Her design truly reflects the spirit of our time and the place.
