The ‘Ghost’ of Stratford’s Past Part 2 Project 2024 James Cook London South Bank University | UK Stratford was at the centre of the world for the Olympic Games in 2012, but has since lost its sense of community and heritage. The area is now rife with crime where youth theft is high, and local unemployment is higher than the London average of 4.8% with 5.2%. The 'ghost' proposes a performance-based theatre space that hopes to engage local residents and youths in producing shows and performances, whilst also lowering unemployment rates by involving local unemployed in the building’s construction via waste brick making. The proposal seeks to reaffirm Stratford's industrial heritage by providing large factory-style windows, a saw-tooth roof, and solar chimneys which provide natural ventilation throughout the building whilst maintaining a factory aesthetic. During the day, users can see the full scope of the chimneys throughout the building whilst taking part in theatre activities such as brick-making with local group, Newham Heritage, or exploring the natural bat habitat that surrounds the amphitheatre where humans and bats co-exist. At night, the external face of the building is lit up using a PV translucent screen, acting as a landmark for the area. The 'ghost' represents the best of Stratford’s past combined with the environmental strategies of the future. James Cook Tutor(s)
