Temple of Dialogue

Part 1 Project 2022

We have forgotten what it means to engage in dialogue, an essential part of our shared social framework. The notion that winning a debate is achieved through proving one wrong, represses possibilities for enquiry into other realms of intellectual growth. According to Socrates, one must in fact lose a debate to win.

The design thesis stems from this Socratic method of dialogue, reframing the idea of arguing to win into arguing to learn. Taking inspiration from the harmony and unity of ancient Greek and Roman theatres, the central auditorium will act as a world within worlds, where educational, recreational, and collaborative events take place as well as providing the students of Nottingham with an inspiring environment to study and learn.

The façade intermediates the architecture with the tranquillity of Nottingham’s Meadow Lane lock, through its literal transparency and phenomenal dislocation of interior elements onto the façade.
