In Between Mist and Moss: Horton Plains Awareness Center Part 1 Project 2020 Deelaka Bogahawatte Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) | Sri Lanka Damage to Horton Plains by pollution & increase of humidity level is evident through several ways including forest die-back. Increased number of visitors to it who visit merely for enjoyment is also partly responsible for this situation. Therefore, the Awareness Centre needs to go beyond mere dissemination of information to create self-realisation and self-motivation, which would make visitors active participants of protecting the environment. As “mist” and fog flowing through mosses, people will gather in this awareness centre. The whole idea is formed by observing the process of moss absorbing water droplets from the cloud forest and leaving it to the earth as its nourishment. The building & the spaces have been designed to give an experience of the nature itself, the cool climate in a tropical country, comfort of passing of the sun, blowing of the wind & singing of the birds. There are three key built spaces in the present design to know about Horton Plains, Self-realize the impacts of human beings towards the environment and Self-motivate on things we can do to protect the environment. The scheme has trees planted in the centre of key spaces to reflect how nature & built environment can co-exist. Deelaka Bogahawatte Tutor(s)
