The Embedded Theatre

Part 1 Project 2020

The design process started with a number of ingredients; spatial, material, and forms of practice. These were liberated by the exploration of a ‘caravanserai’, which inspired ‘The Embedded Theatre’, within the partially abandoned urban landscape of the medieval village Belmonte Calabro.
Making a dialogical relationship between the citizens of Belmonte and states of the existing abandoned village fabric, gradually, the theatre emerged through iterations of models, sketches and rendering techniques, where light and shade became actors playing deeply into the sections. The roof spanned the entire complex of existing and ‘adjusted buildings’, allowing for a loose-fit architecture to ramble in cascades through the hill town and provide a myriad of uses from theatre to market place.
