Influenced by globalism, most of cities in China have carried out large-scale urbanization, often aiming at gaining economic benefits, but ignoring the local place identity and public memory. As one of the most representative local public spaces and memory, market space is facing the threat of being transformed into generic forms.

In order to recreate an identity of the old bund, the project transforms the traditional and dominant type of market spaces into a hybridised program and spaces to reactivate the vitality of traditional market spaces. With the aim to create a new experience of market for the public incorporating the history of fishing in Ningbo, the project integrates an aquarium with local fish market into a new building typology, i.e. it combines fish market spaces with aquarium and other associated cultural programs like gallery and library to provide unique experience and recapture the bustling life of the Old Bund.

The project envisions the “streets” and all its associated meanings and forms to inspire on architectural form and space, in this case, the “streets” are weaved into the building from the external streets and public squares, and become the key strategies to link the various markets, aquariums and places at all levels.
