Resilient Mecca Part 1 Project 2019 Yasmeen ShehadehDanya Al-khalaf Kuwait University | Kuwait As a response to Mecca’s shortage in accommodating pilgrims and ongoing demolition to religious and historical places, this project aims to propose an alternative. Based on a research conducted on existing hotels and future expansions, in addition to a revisit to the metabolism architectural movement, Mecca can be readdressed as a resilient city with capsules that are easily attached and detached from a network. If these capsules can optimise space, reshape the urban fabric, with sensitivity to its user being the pilgrim, there may be no need to build new hotels nor demolish what’s remaining of valuable landmarks. Can Mecca’s state transform from impermanence and overcrowding to adaptability and expandability? Yasmeen ShehadehDanya Al-khalaf Tutor(s)
