Brisbane Mediatheque Part 2 Project 2003 Cameron SheedyJoanne Macey Queensland University of Technology Brisbane | Australia The project is located on a significant site which offers commanding waterfront views while being bounded by heavy traffic. With contrasting public and private issues, a podium is conceived that at once raises the plaza level above the visual noise of traffic while emphasising the outward 180 0 views. The conflicting functions of the Mediatheaque are expressed and traditional ideas of library are juxtaposed against contrasting contemporary notions of media. This creates a functional hierarchy of solid, void and transparency as the brief becomes polarised - providing a public readability.Contrast then becomes the central theme and guiding principal throughout the design. The Brisbane Mediatheque is a project that aimed to engage students in the full range of architectural concerns. It is sited on a significant urban corner in the Brisbane CBD and challenged students to respond to a demanding physical and cultural context, and complex issues of program. The project posed questions about the future of public urban space and institutions. It required speculation about the nature of this new building type, yet also specifying a building outcome with a resolved tectonic presence. Overall students had to synthesize their investigations and project development into a clear and rigorous architectural outcome. Tutor(s)
