Permanent Meanwhile

Part 2 Project 2019

‘Permanent Meanwhile’ explores the right to inclusive public space within the context of socio-economic divide in North Kensington. In a post-Grenfell period, where neighbourhood action has surged, the project proposes a more community driven model for social space which works alongside the retail dominated heart of Golborne Road - with the aim of creating resilience against urban change.

Through collaborating with ‘Grow Meanwhile’, the proposal is centred around Meanwhile Gardens' fight to secure a lease for their Factory site. The architectural design is based on making the site more clearly public and looks to the high street (as the key area of research) and its conditions of spill-out, access and temporary activity to drive the spatial organisation of the mixed use, community oriented factory building - resulting in a garden/highstreet hybrid which can develop and adapt to reflect the requirements of the community it caters to. The project has balanced community engagement and speculative design as tools to question the role of inclusive space within a divided community in the hope of securing a lease from RBKC in the short term, and reactivating the gardens and the bottom-up activity within it in the long-term.
