Balance

Part 1 Project 2021

The possibilities and the complex, extensive inventory of architecture in today’s world are often in danger of being forgotten, such as working with fundamental, architectural elements. Similar to curator Rem Koolhaas’ 2014 Venice Biennale, the Fundamentals design studio recognizes the importance and potential of this issue, and focuses on 16 basic architectural elements. In order to be able to examine these to their essence, this work specifically addresses two basic elements. – The ramp and the column. The design task is to create connected spaces that are defined and represented by characteristics of these two elements. The ramp and column should form the DNA of the design project. This task was approached by the methodology of poetic elaboration of a story and simultaneously through calculating and experimenting in the model.

The result is a floating composition of a ramp and columns, which balances on the horizon of Lake Constance. Like the reeds, columns rise out of the water, holding by their weight the opposite end of the ramp above its reflection. The inclination contrasts with the horizontal plane of the water. An architecture is created whose essence of the elements can be experienced through water and air and lives from the constant change of time and motion. The predictability generates the precision of poetry, through whose harmony the balance is created.
